Abstract

The security of web-based login systems is becoming increasingly important as cyber threats, which are vulnerable to data theft, continue to rise. One method used to enhance security is hashing and encrypting data before storing it in a database. This study analyzes and compares the efficiency and security of the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-256) and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256) in securing stored user data. The research follows the waterfall model, with testing conducted to evaluate the performance of both algorithms in terms of processing time efficiency, generated data size, and resistance to attacks. The results indicate that SHA-256 excels in storage efficiency and processing speed because it produces a fixed-length 512-bit hash. Meanwhile, AES-256 provides a higher level of security with its 256-bit symmetric key encryption, though it requires longer processing time and generates a larger ciphertext (1,600 bits). Based on the test results, SHA-256 is recommended for systems that require efficient storage and fast data validation, whereas AES-256 is more suitable for systems prioritizing data protection against cyber attacks. This research contributes to the development of data encryption strategies in web-based authentication systems and encourages further exploration of hybrid methods to enhance system security and efficiency.
