Abstract

This study aims to explain why Turkey changed its political stance orientation regarding Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) using a neoclassical realism approach that highlights the role of elite perceptions in shaping foreign policy. There is still little research that discusses the reasons for Turkey changing its political stance regarding Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The research method used is explanatory research. This researcher has the aim of answering the phenomenon to be studied, then analyzing it. The results of this study show that Turkey's change in stance regarding Sweden's accession to NATO was used by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to win the 2023 election, sue Sweden for terrorism in his country, remove the embargo from Sweden and the United States and obtain F-16 fighter jets by the United States. These findings contribute to understanding how Turkey's foreign policy is transactional and used as an instrument of domestic politics. The implications of this change in stance also show how security politics and foreign policy can be used strategically to maintain power in a competitive political system.
