Abstract

Interactions conducted through the internet have led to various issues that have become social concerns in Indonesia. Among the increasingly urgent problems faced by netizens in Indonesia are the prevalence of hate speech, verbal harassment, cyberbullying, doxing, and others. One of the contributing factors to the emergence of these behaviors is the online disinhibition effect. On the other hand, individual behavior is closely related to self-regulation. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-regulation and the online disinhibition effect among young adults using the TikTok application in Indonesia. This research employs a correlational quantitative approach, utilizing accidental sampling as the sampling technique. The study involved 253 subjects aged 18 to 40 years who use TikTok. The self-regulation variable was measured using the Short Self Regulation Questionnaire, while the online disinhibition effect variable was assessed using the Online Disinhibition Effect Scale. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between self-regulation and the online disinhibition effect (p < 0.001; r = -0.554), with a moderate strength of association among young adult TikTok users in Indonesia. The results indicate that higher levels of self-regulation in individuals are associated with lower levels of online disinhibition effect, and vice versa.
