Abstract
This study aims to determine whether training has an effect on employee performance with competence as a bridging variable in the Malang City Education and Culture Office. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The population in this study were all ASN employees totaling seventy-three people. The sample obtained or the actual number of respondents was sixty-one respondents from a total population of seventy-three respondents, with a sampling technique using saturated sampling. Data were collected through interviews and distributing questionnaires compiled using a Likert scale with a scale range of one to five, where one indicates "strongly disagree" and five indicates "strongly agree". The data analysis technique used was Path Analysis based on Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) with the help of SmartPLS software. Hypothesis testing was carried out using the Bootstrapping method to test the significance of the relationship between variables. The results showed that training had a positive effect on employee performance, but not through increased competence as a mediating variable. Effective training can have a direct impact on employee performance without having to wait for significant changes in employee competence, because the training material includes elements that are directly related to daily tasks. This indicates that the effectiveness of training has a more direct impact on improving employee performance than through competency improvement channels.
