Abstract

The quality of romantic relationships is an important aspect of early adulthood. One factor that may influence the quality of these relationships is father attachment. This study aims to examine the effect of father attachment on romantic relationship quality with self-compassion as a mediator. The approach used is a quantitative cross-sectional design with 357 early adult women currently in romantic relationships as participants. Data were collected using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). Data analysis was conducted using mediation analysis with bootstrap analysis on SPSS. The results showed that father attachment did not directly affect romantic relationship quality (β = 0.005; p = 0.715). However, father attachment had a positive effect on self-compassion (β = 0.326; p < 0.001), and self-compassion had a positive effect on romantic relationship quality (β = 0.103; p < 0.000). Mediation analysis confirmed that self-compassion fully mediated the relationship between father attachment and romantic relationship quality. The implications of this study suggest that self-compassion plays a crucial role in forming healthier romantic relationships. Therefore, interventions focusing on enhancing self-compassion may be an effective strategy for improving romantic relationship quality in early adulthood women.
