Abstract

This research focuses on the development of an expert system aimed at
helping prospective students choose a major at university based on their interest
and talents. Prospective students often choose a major due to pressure from parents
or simply follow their friends’ suggestions, which leads to mistakes in selecting
major. To avoid future regrets, an expert system has been designed by combining
forward chaining and backward chaining methods. The forward chaining method
is used to process known facts and apply inference rules to extract further data.
Meanwhile, backward chaining starts with a goal and works backward to find facts
that support the goal in order to generate major recommendations. The
implementation of this system in the form of a website allows easy access and
intuitive interaction for users. It is hoped that this research will contribute to
helping prospective students make the right decision in choosing a university major.
