Abstract

This study aims to answer the question of how family communication patterns are formed to maintain the motivation of communication science students of the 2018 batch at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang to work on their thesis. The method used in this study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. To obtain primary data, this study uses a semi-structured interview technique with several students of the 2018 batch who meet the criteria for research subjects. The theory used to analyze the results of the study is the theory of family communication patterns developed by Ascan F. Koerner and Mary Anne Fitzpatrick in 2002. The results of the research that has been conducted indicate that the motivation to work on the thesis is formed in each subject, which is based on the four family communication patterns applied to the subject's family. Has derived several categories of motivation that have an impact on the thesis work process. The four family communication patterns such as Consensual, Pluralistic, Protective, and Laissez-Faire form motivation to the subject based on the form of communication, the character of the parents and the subject, the condition of the subject, and external factors that strengthen the formation of motivation to work on the thesis in communication science students of the 2018 batch at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
