Abstract
In the era of globalization, information accessibility has become increasingly flexible and easy
through social media platforms, one of which is TikTok that has gained extraordinary popular
ity in Indonesia due to its entertaining short video content that attracts the attention of millions,
especially among young viewers. However, research shows that TikTok usage can affect an
individual’s attention span, thereby raising concerns, particularly in academic settings. This
study aims to provide an in-depth overview of TikTok usage among college students, focusing
on 30 psychology students from Muhammadiyah University of Malang as respondents, by em
ploying a quantitative approach with a descriptive design that measures usage intensity based
on four main aspects: duration (how much time is spent on the platform), frequency (how often
it is accessed), attention (the level of focus invested in the content), and engagement (how ac
tively users interact with the videos). Preliminary findings indicate that female users dominate
the platform compared to male users, with the majority falling within the age range of 18-21
years, which is typical for students, suggesting that this age group represents the most active
demographic and reflecting TikTok’s appeal to young people seeking quick entertainment and
social interaction, while also providing valuable insights into the impact of TikTok usage on
attention and engagement, especially regarding academic tasks, and contributing to a broader
understanding of the influence of social media on cognitive and social behaviors.
