Abstract

Background: Acne is a condition of clogged pores on the skin which then causes inflammation. This condition can be exacerbated by the activity of P. acnes, S. aureus, and S. epidermidis bacteria. Tea tree oil has medicinal effects as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, effective for the treatment of wounds and acne with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Objective: Explains the potential of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil to treat acne-causing bacteria and mentions the content of compounds that have antibacterial activity to overcome acne problems. Method: This study uses a qualitative descriptive method of literature review using the database Science Direct, Wiley Online Library, Google scholar, and PubMed by searching Indonesian and English journals. The keywords used in Indonesian are "tea tree oil dan jerawat" and "Melaleuca alternifolia dan jerawat". Meanwhile, in English using the keywords "tea tree oil" OR "Melaleuca alternifolia" AND "acne". Result and Conclusion: Based on the research, obtained 10 journals that match the inclusion and exclusion criteria which will then be analyzed for their contents. The results showed that tea tree oil has the potential as an antibacterial that causes acne because it has a strong to very strong inhibition zone against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. acnes bacteria. The MIC of tea tree oil has a small value, so the smaller the value obtained, the wider the inhibition zone for bacteria. The MIC range of tea tree oil is 0.25% - 2.5% (v/v). The content of tea tree oil compounds that have antibacterial activity are Terpinen-4-ol, -terpinene, -terpinene, 1,8-cineole, -terpinolene, -terpineol, -pinene, D-Limonene, sabinene, myrcene , -cymene, and terpinolene.
