Abstract

Background: In inhibiting the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes that causes acne, antibacterial compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, and tannins are needed in Aloe vera and other herbal plants. Purpose: To find out more effective pure Aloe vera plant or in combination with other herbal plants that can inhibit Propionibacterium acnes bacteria as well as any herbal plants that can potentially be combined with Aloe vera plants. Method: Using descriptive qualitative research methodology, namely the study of literature from various literature sources from research articles both nationally and internationally. The keywords are “Aloe vera” AND “Propionibacterium acnes” and in English “Aloe vera” OR “combined with herbal plants” AND “Propionibacterium acnes” with a range of 2012-2021. The journal is fulltext and open access from the provider of the Google Scholar page , Pubmed, Wiley Online Library. Result or conclusion: Based on the research, obtained as many as 10 journals and the results obtained are that Aloe vera has effectiveness in inhibiting Propionibacterium acnes bacteria because it contains antibacterial compounds such as saponins, flavonoids and tannins. Several other herbal plants have the potential to be combined with Aloe vera because they contain the same antibacterial compounds. These plants include: leaf gotu kola (Centella asiatica), marigold flower (Calendula officinalis), malacca (Phyllanthus emblica), red betel leaf (Piper crocatum ruiz & pav), basil (Ocimum basilicum), mangosteen rind (Garcinia mangostana), green tea leaf (Camellia sinensis), tea tree oil or tea trea oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), betel leaf (Piper betle), tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum), bark sweet (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), and cucumber (Cucumis sativus).
