Abstract

Literary work, manifested in its various forms such as short story, novels, drama, and poetry, represent the condition and historical moments existing in the region, country, and world. Literary work plays a role to reveal the truth through their language and symbols behind the works. Song, a lyrical poetry is a representative of music, which can transmit ideas and emotions to its listeners. Elton John as singer from Pinner, Middlesex, with his concern attempt to imply the ideas through the songs he sung and brought the listener to the events inspiring his in writing the songs. The three major purposes considered being the main problems in analyzing Elton John song were to: (1) Finding out the themes of Elton John song, (2) figuring out the meaning expressed by author, and, (3) describing the message inspiring the song writing. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design to analyze the data. The approaches that were suitable with thesis analysis were objective and historical approaches. The objective approach was used because the objects as a part of the research are themes, meaning and message in Elton John’s song. The historical approach was used To find basic clues related to the events behind the lyrics writing in the current times. Here, one song was selected. The song is: Candle in the Wind. The results of this study were: the theme of the song based on “The Death of Lady Diana was the deeply feeling of loss. The message conveyed in the song was: Lady Diana was a Princess who is worth admiring for her meritorious service and her attention for part society in her world; she never differentiates the rash, tribe, and religious. The meaning based on The Death of Lady Diana is period of England’s and she is rose that symbolizes love, affection and bravery.
