Abstract

The discomfort resulting from changes in one’s social life can be described as loneliness. This feeling gives rise to helplessness, lack of self confidence, judging oneself as a worthless and unloved individual. Loneliness is caused by a lack of social skills, such as social support. The aim of this research is to examine whether there is an influence of peer support on loneliness in overseas students. The research desgin uses a quantitative approach. The research sampling technique used accidental sampling. The subjects of this research were 501 overseas students, aged 18 – 24 years. This research uses the UCLA Loneliness Scale (version 3) and Perceived Social Support instruments. The results of simple linear regression analysis show that there is a significant negative influence between peer support on loneliness in overseas students, where peer support can influence someone to not easily experience loneliness or it could be said that loneliness is decreasing. The overall influence of peer support on loneliness is 17.9%. The implications for overseas students are that they tend to accept the situation, such as not having feelings of loneliness, being comfortable with changes in social life, starting to have a sense of confidence in themselves, and tending to assess themselves as valuable and loved individuals.
