Abstract

This study aims to find out the reasons and background of the community around the pasung victims giving stigma, then to find out the response of the families of the pasung victims to the stigma given by the community and to find out the reason for the family of the victims of holding one of their family members who is experiencing mental disorders. In this study, the method used is a qualitative type using a case study approach and data collection techniques in the form of observation interviews and documentation which will be analyzed by means of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Pasung is a phenomenon that occurs to ODGJ who are chained to their hands and feet and a small house is made which is only enough for the body of the victim of ODGJ. The results of this study explain that the reason and background of the community giving stigma to victims of shackles is that the community considers their subordinates when there are ODGJs in their village, but those ODGJs are not in pasung they will feel afraid and can endanger community activities. Then from this phenomenon, various kinds of stigma have emerged, ranging from Stereotypes, Labeling, Exclusion, and Discrimination. With the stigma given by the community to the shackles, the victim’s family responded with a feeling of patience and considered that the incident was a test from god. The reason for the victim's family to put their family members in shackles is that they have done everything they can to cure it, from medical to non-medical treatment in a short period of time because they want instant results when the treatment should take a long time. The presence of the role and function of the family here is also very much needed to always care for and accompany the victim so that the victim can be healed and carry out his social functions like normal people.
