Abstract

ABSTRACT This study analyzed Euphemism in Mata Najwa Talk Show Edition of 2019. Talk Show is a a program in television or frequently referred to as The Talk Program. A number of television station has Talk Show program, one of which is Mata Najwa. In Mata Najwa Talk Show any language may enrapture audience one of which is the use of euphemism. It is a proper expression to substitute bad phrases and inappropriately uttered to the audience. Therefore, research problems of this study included (1) How is the form of Euphemism in Mata Najwa Talk Show Edition of 2019, (2) How does the component of speech events generate euphemism in Mata Najwa Talk Show Edition of 2019. Data source of this study is Mata Najwa Talk Show uploaded on Najwa Shihab youtube channel for the show of October, November, and December 2019 including 5 transcripts of Mata Najwa Talk Show. It was in the form of words, phrases, and sentences containing euphemism symptoms. Data collection technique of this study used documentation as data sources were in the form of conversation texts used in Mata Najwa Talk Show edition of 2019. Data collection process was performed by transcribing any conversations in Mata Najwa talk show edition of 2019, then identifying research objects namely form and component of speech event arising from Mata Najwa talk show edition of 2019, and recording data based on form of euphemism and component of speech event resulting in euphemism. Data was analyzed by such a way of collecting, arranging, classifying and providing it with a code based on indicator of study. From the results of analysis and discussion, it was found out that in Mata Najwa Talk Show Edition of 2019 (1) there are euphemism forms namely satire, figurative expression, periphrasis, unfamiliar terms, and a word used for other words substitution. (2) Euphemism was used in a state of imaging, obscuring problems, self protection, underestimating and sustaining arguments. The use of euphemism is among others in which having higher position, members of political party, academics and government officers. The purpose of using euphemism was to respect, appreciate, not offend, break the ice and bring to mind such a state. Form of speech content included dialogue, declarative sentence, prologue and speech. Euphemism is identified using special, general words, synonym, English terms and Javanese terms. Euphemism is orally delivered. It is used as a result of social and personal distance. Euphemism is used for political and governmental context only.
