Abstract
Metaphor is a linguistic device that is a significant part of human life. Metaphor offers a variety of choices to express ideas with a variety of intent. Metaphors often appear mainly in daily life, such as in conversations, films, poetry, even in newspapers that have a standard feature in terms of language use. In this digital era, a newspaper is now expanding into highly accessible online newspapers. This research analyzes metaphor, i.e., the ontological metaphor, as the focus of this study. This research analyzes the ontological metaphor based on its types on the entertainment news in The Jakarta Post online newspaper. This research aims to find the types of ontological metaphor and their application on the entertainment news in The Jakarta Post online newspaper. Descriptive qualitative was applied as the research design in this study. Thirty-five (35) data were collected from the Jakarta Post entertainment news in July 2021 News edition. The documents were applied as the instruments and the object of this study. In this case, The Jakarta Post online news platform is the document and instrument of this study. This research discovers five types of ontological metaphors, namely personification, metonymy, hyperbole, simile, and idiomatic expression. Thirty-five (35) data were collected from the Jakarta Post entertainment news with the most frequently appeared was personification which appeared ten (10) times, followed by metonymy, hyperbole, and simile that have the equal number of frequency which appears seven (7) times, and idiomatic expression which appeared six (6) times. From the result of this study, ontological metaphor is a significant device for entertainment news because it provides various strategies to make the article's ideas more exciting and more accessible to be understood by newsreaders. In conclusion, this research is expected to be valuable to students, especially English Language Education Department students, university, and future researchers, using ontological metaphors in online news platforms as a learning medium.
