Abstract

Although Bahasa is the national language for Indonesians, nowadays, people modify their way of expressing something by adding another language such as English into their utterances. English is chosen since it is a lingua franca, and many people understand this language. The practice of code-switching and code-mixing is undeniable in this modern and global era. This research explores how code- switching and code-mixing are used in Indonesia’s Next Top Model TV show and whether the participants misuse the language(s) while using code-switching and code-mixing. The qualitative method was employed in this research. The data were obtained from four clips of INTM. The researcher observed the videos and transcribed the dialogue of all participants to be analyzed. The result shows that the participants used intra-sentential, inter-sentential and tag types of code-switching. Moreover, the researcher also found that the participants used the four code-mixing types: word insertion, phrase insertion, hybrid, and repetition. Furthermore, several misuses occurred while the participants switch and mix the languages, such as misuse between singular and plural, missing preposition, the mismatch between Indonesian’s suffix or prefix and the English word, redundant word, and misuse of a word.
