Abstract

Firnanda. Sindy Ardina Ayu. 2023. Analysis of Silence in BIPA Students’ Speaking Practices: Psycholinguistics Study. Thesis, Indonesian Language Education Study Program. FKIP, Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Supervisor: (1) Drs. Sudjalil, M.Si., M.Pd (2) Fida Pangesti, M.A

Silence is a phenomenon of stopping or experiencing disfluency when making a speech but it does not add meaning and can cause errors in making the speech. Based on this, the problem formulation in this research is (1) what are the types of silence in the speaking practice of BIPA students, (2) what are the factors that cause silence in the speaking practice of BIPA students.
This type of research is a qualitative approach using descriptive methods. The data source in this research is recordings of BIPA students doing speaking practice. The data collection procedure for the first problem formulation was carried out by (1) recording, (2) listening and taking notes and (3) category tables, while for the second problem formulation it was carried out by (1) interviews and (2) classified data. The data analysis technique used in this research for the first problem formulation uses the lapse technique, while for the second problem formulation uses the stages of the Miles and Huberman model (1992:20). Checking the validity of the findings in this study used triangulation techniques.
From the results of the analysis and discussion, four types of silence experienced by BIPA students were found. The types of silence referred to are (1) repetition, (2) insertion (3) prolongations and (4) revision. Apart from that, several factors were found that caused silence experienced by BIPA students, including (1) nervousness, (2) unintentional or spontaneous, (3) lack of mastery of vocabulary and (4) translating vocabulary.
