Abstract

The research analyzes the phenomenon of foreign language anxiety among the international students learning Bahasa Indonesia at BIPA University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research intends to answer the research questions “What are the types of foreign language anxiety among international students in learning Bahasa Indonesia at BIPA University of Muhammadiyah Malang?” and “How do the international students overcome their foreign language anxiety while learning Bahasa Indonesia at BIPA University of Muhammadiyah Malang?”. The descriptive qualitative was applied as the research design in this research. Eight international students contributed by participating in interviews and filling out the written interview. The instruments of this research used a semi-structured interview guide. The questions were modified from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz, et. al. (1986). This research discovered three types of foreign language anxiety among the international students with the most frequently experienced was communication apprehension, then test anxiety, and the last experienced was fear of negative evaluation. For overcoming foreign language anxiety among the international students, they did self-encouragement, self-reflection, and asking help from others.
