Abstract
In this world, people in society come from different cultural backgrounds. With the continuous globalization, people need to have effective communication with each other with different backgrounds of culture, especially in diverse workforce and environment. Cross-cultural communication is significant since it involves not only the ability for the culture and language but also emotional and social skills such as empathy, humanity, and the understanding to manage anxiety and certainty. This research had the purpose to elaborate the cultural barriers that often happen in exchange participants of “English Teaching” Global Volunteer in Thailand in AIESEC Organization and marks out the way in overcoming the cultural barriers to create effective cross-cultural communication. The research used a qualitative research method and the data was collected by a semi-structured interview. The researcher conducted the semi-structured interview with four students of seven grade of the semester at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang through video conference by Google Meet application. The researcher found nine cultural barriers that happened in cross-cultural communication in exchange-participant in the ‘English Teaching’ AIESEC Global Volunteer program in Thailand. These cultural barriers were physical barriers which consist of two perspectives, weather and accent, psychological barriers, language differences, misunderstanding, food, belief and values, norms and rules, culture shock, and stereotypes. The way in overcoming the cultural barriers are growing the tolerance by respecting other’s differences as the uniqueness, increasing a willingness to learn new language and culture, sharing each other culture to achieve a cross-cultural understanding, and spreading kindness.
