Abstract
Dysphemism is a part of communication frequently used among close friends, between strangers, even used by individuals to vent their frustration. People are not aware that the dysphemism word does not always interpret explicitly, the key is as long as the speaker used the words to mock and the hearer finds it offending, no matter how inoffensive the words are it can be called dysphemism, all depends on people interpretation after hearing the words. This study aims to find the types of dysphemism and the purpose of using dysphemism. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and the data taken from the transcriptions and the videos of Gravity Falls tv-series, the researcher involved all characters in the series, as long as their dialogue has dysphemism in it. Rawson’s theory is used to find the types of dysphemism, and Ljung’s theory is used to find the purpose of using dysphemism. To get the data, the researcher watched the videos and converted the SRT (SubRip Subtitle) file to pdf, the researcher then highlighted the selected words that match the category of each type of dysphemism. After analyzing the data, there was 57 dysphemism found, for example, “holy mackerel, poop heads, slick.” The finding of the research then classified into Rawson’s theory there are profanity, obscenity, and insult. The most dominant type of the three was insult. Out of 12 categorizations on the purpose of using dysphemism based on Ljung’s the researcher found seven which was (1) react to agreement and disagreement, (2) affirmation of dislike, (3) exclamation of shock and irritation, (4) to give rude advice, (5) to insult, (6) to scold, (7) to emphasize a question.
