Abstract

This study aims to understand the role of women in Islamic education from the perspective of Muhammad Quraish Shihab. This research departs from the problem, namely discrimination against women, starting from interpretations of religious texts and real practices in the field, especially those related to the role of women in education. These interpretations view that women have a half male mind, do not have physiological perfection like men, and so on. These interpretations ultimately marginalize the role of women in Islamic education. Women are seen as not needing to take tertiary education or women should not be asked for opinions because of their weak minds. Whereas Islam upholds equality between men and women and each party has the right and obligation to complement each other, not to negate each other, including in the realm of Islamic education. This study uses a qualitative method with the subject of discussion is the thought of Muhammad Quraish Shihab. The choice of Quraish Shihab thought as the subject of discussion is based on the researcher's reading of his thoughts written in his books. The data is obtained through documentation of the works of Muhammad Quraish Shihab. while the data analysis technique uses the content analysis method. The results showed that men and women had a balanced role in their role in Islamic education. This is evidenced by the thoughts of the Quraish Shihab that support this.
