Abstract
Translation can be defined as encoding the meaning and form in the target language by means of the decoded meaning and form of the source language.” Owji, (2013). Students of English Language Education Department (ELED) UMM are required to pass the translation course in order to create good quality translators. The translation course demands the students to open and organize a Translation Bureau which is the course passing requirement. However, it turned out that the theory and the strategy that the students learnt in the class are not enough. A lot of terminology and word choices are more technical. Here, the researcher wants to explore how they manage to solve translation problems, what strategy they use to translate for them. This research applied qualitative research approach and implementing Document Analysis. Research subject refers to students of ELED UMM which have passed translation course and already experienced in translation for one period of semester or more. The result of this research showed that free translation is the most use one by the ELED students of UMM in translating thesis abstract. Literal and communicative translations are the second mostly use. Lastly, word-for-word translation is rarely strategy to use in translating thesis abstract. The way they apply those strategies are absolutely the same by checking the language form or level before choosing which translation strategy does match to the text. The researcher also found that the used of google translate as a grammar check and proof check can ease the students in translating thesis abstract. It helps students reduce time consuming so they can effectively do their translation work.
