Abstract

Figurative language is a language usage in an unusual way to deliver a special meaning behind it. There are several kinds of figurative language that can be identified, one of them is irony. This study focuses on the irony with several purposes such as, (1) To identify kinds of irony used in The Great Gatsby novel by Scott F. Fitzgerald; (2) To identify the irony that is frequently used in The Great Gatsby novel by Scott F. Fitzgerald. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, the data was showed in form of descriptive. The object of this research was The Great Gatsby novel which was analyzed by using objective approach. All of the data were collected by reading the novel thoroughly and utilizing other documents. The result of the research showed that there were 3 kinds of irony that can be found throughout the novel. Those are verbal irony, dramatical irony, and situational irony. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there were 24 findings of irony and the most used irony in the novel was verbal irony with the total of 17 findings throughout the novel.
