Abstract
Background : non alcoholic fatty liver disease which is characterized by hepatic lipid accumulation 5% of liver total weight due to enhancement of free fatty acids and oxidative stress from atherogenic diet. The ethanolic extract of Chayote contains gallic acid, Luteolin, caffeic acid and flavonoids that is suspected to be able to prevent hepatic steatosis. Objective : To determine the effect of Chayote (Sechium edule) Ethanolic Extract on hepatic steatosis percentage in Rats (rattus norvegicus) atherosclerotic model. Method: In vivo experimental with post test only control group design. The samples using 20 rats were divided into 5 groups, the negative group were not given atherogenic diet, the positive group were given atherogenic diet without chayote ethanolic extract, while groups 1, 2, and 3 were given aterogenic diet and chayote ethanolic extract 20; 40; and 80(mg/200gBB/day). Result : One-way ANOVA test results showed significant differences between groups. Post hoc test results showed the effective dose to reduce hepatic steatosis is 40 mg/200gBB/day. Results of linear regression test showed significant effect on hepatic steatosis percentage reduction about 57%. Conclusion : The administration of chayote ethanolic extract has a significant effect to reducing the hepatic steatosis percentage in Rats atherosclerotic models.
