Abstract
Metaphor exists in everyday life conversation and not just a mere language. It is distinguished by understanding something by describing something else. This is crucial to know that metaphor long years ago tends to be written in prose but nowadays it is also adopted into literary works like the novel and even into the song's lyrics. The current study was intended to identify the kinds of metaphor found in the novel and describe the connotative and denotative meanings of the metaphorical expressions. This study used a qualitative research design. It dealt with non-numerical data to describe the kinds of metaphors found in the novel. The object was an English classic novel titled "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells, primarily, the expressions produced by Time Traveler who was the main character in this novel. This research used documents to gain an understanding of metaphor. Subsequently, the researcher used "Metaphor" written by Zoltan Kovecses, and "Metaphors We Live By" by George Lakoff and Johnson as the primary source. The researcher found twenty-four metaphorical expressions data that are produced by the main character, Time Traveler. First, the orientational metaphor has seventeen data and becomes the mostly emerged all kinds of metaphor. Second, the structural metaphor is the slightest one that only has two data. Third, the ontological metaphor is in the middle position that has five data. Then, the connotations of all metaphorical expressions are dominated by negative connotative meaning.
