Abstract
Translation is a method of rendering meaning, thoughts, or messages of content beginning with one language and ending with another. One of the most interesting translations is the idiomatic expression translation because idioms are expressions peculiar to a language that cannot be translated from the words that form them. There are four specific strategies to translate idioms, using an idiom of similar meaning and form (ISMF), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (IDF), translation by paraphrase (TP), and translation by omission (TO). This research has three research problems, those are: (1) The idiomatic expressions and meanings found in the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” (2) The strategies used by the translator in translating idiomatic expressions found in the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” (3) The dominant strategy used by the translator in translating the idiomatic expressions in the novel “Crazy Rich Asians”. This research results the descriptive data in the form of written or oral data from the objects of the research being observed. This research used the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” by Kevin Kwan as the object. Based on the data analysis, the researcher found 52 idiomatic expressions in the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” by Kevin Kwan. Those 52 idiomatic expressions have different meanings and forms at all. There are 22 idiomatic expressions were translated by the translator used paraphrase strategy (TP). Furthermore, 20 idiomatic expressions were translated by the translator used similar meaning but dissimilar form strategy (IDF), 8 idiomatic expressions translated by similar meaning and form strategy (ISMF), and 2 idiomatic expressions are translated by omission strategy (TO). The most strategy used by the translator in translating idiomatic expressions in the novel “Crazy Rich Asians” by Kevin Kwan is paraphrase strategy (TP).
