Abstract

This study is entitled an analysis of code switching in Instagram captions used by students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research is aimed to find out (1) the types of code switching used in Instagram captions, and (2) what are the underlying reasons behind the use of code switching in Instagram captions. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design and the subjects of this study were the students from class B in English Language Education at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. To collect the data, document analysis and interview guide were used as instruments in this research. The result of this research showed that were 3 types of code switching found in Instagram captions. There are 4 tag code switchings, 17 inter-sentential code switchings, and 35 intra-sentential code switchings. The research found the students' underlying reason behind the use of switching in their instagram captions, they are (1) to make it more simple, intriguing, straight to the point and easy to understand, (2) it allows the student to convey what they want to say because they think the diction in English would be quite polite than Bahasa and (3) to share the students' opinions in another language and to practice English by increasing their new vocabulary.
