Abstract

Slang is an informal or casual spoken language which is created and employed by a group of people in certain community. Slang is categorized as improper, flippant, and also impolite expressions. Slang can express a new term or old term in a new way. Slang is commonly used by younger speakers and groups or communities with the same interests. Slang is employed to make casual, playful, fashionable, and colorful expressions. Slang is divided into two kinds, common slang and in-group slang. This research intended to investigate: (1) the slangs that were utilized by the author in “Muallaf” novel (2) the kinds of slang in “Muallaf” novel (3) the meaning of slangs in “Muallaf” novel. The design in this research employed descriptive qualitative research because the data were described in the form of words. The research object was slangs in “Muallaf” novel. The research utilized objectives approach. The instrument of this research was document analysis where the researcher as the key instrument. The findings of the research revealed that there were 129 slangs in the novel. Those slangs were divided into two kinds, common and in-group slangs. There were 105 common slangs and 24 in-group slangs. Mostly, the meanings of slangs contained negative connotative meanings. Most of the slangs in the novel were employed in the form of conversations between the characters in chapter I and chapter II within the novel. Therefore by using slang, it makes the author easily to deliver the story of the novel.
