Abstract

The purpose of this study can be defined as (1) to reveal the implementation of teaching by English song to teach the fourth-grade students thematic lessons for young learners (EYL) program (2) to find out the problems in using songs to teach the fourth-grade students thematic lessons for young learners (EYL) program (3) to explain the student teachers strategies to deal with the problems in using songs to teach the fourth-grade students thematic units for English programs to young students (EYL). The researcher employed a qualitative research design. The data were obtained from three student-teachers of fourth-grade in EYL program at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The instruments used for collecting the data were observation field notes, interview guide and document analysis. The researcher was observing the student teachers’ activities in the class and interviewing the student teachers about the difficulties that they faced. The data that had been collected through the observation, interview and document analysis will be analyzed in several ways, as follows: (1) summarizing the data that were taken from the result of observation of classroom activities; (2) selecting data based on the result of interview; (3) analyzing the document that was lesson plan of student teachers, then drawing conclusions based on the results of data analysis. This findings revealed the implementation of English songs for teaching the fourth-grade, they were (1) student-teacher has difficulty demonstrating movements that suit the vocabulary of the song; (2) song whose lyrics have been modified by the student-teacher, making the song feel strange and difficult to convey to the students; (3) student-teacher had difficulty asking students to sing and dance together. Furthermore, there were problems faced by student teachers, they were (1) student-teacher uses flashcard media as an auxiliary student-teacher tool to demonstrate the vocabulary movement so that students understand what the student-teacher is demonstrating; (2) singing the song over and over before the students ask the teachers to sing the song together; and (3) sing and dance together beside the student and ask the students to come forward to the class to sing and dance with the student-teacher.
