Abstract

Every parent would want to have a healthy child, both physically and mentally. The situation will be different when the children require special needs, so that children experience barriers in the process of growth. This study focused on parents who have children with special needs, specifically children who have mental retardation. The importance of social support given by parents is that the ability of socialization and communication skills a child can develop optimally as a provision to live together in society, because only from that support, which could give a big influence in the lives of children. The purpose of this study is to determine the forms of support provided by parents on child mental retardation who require special needs. This study uses a qualitative approach with case study method. Subjects of the study were 3 people who have a child that is mentally retarded level of being. The method used in collecting information with interview. Research procedures are pre field and the field work phase. While data analysis is divided into three parts, namely reduction of information, display information and conclusion drawing/verification. Furthermore, to check the validity of the information, researchers use triangulation techniques, namely triangulation, a source with the subject of kind. The results showed that all subjects of research have provided support in accordance with his understanding maximally respectively, but the support provided has not led to what is needed by the mentally retarded child and not ideal because it is said there are some aspects that have not been fulfilled. These aspects is the support on self­esteem and support from social groups. In addition, each subject has also been providing support on different aspects so that the effects obtained are also different. Various effects can be felt, among others, is when parents provide support in the form of the fulfillment of physiological needs instumental in full so that can be felt is when children become excited about school, contrast to the informational support, provision of this support include searching for information about the problems of children by parents the right people and giving advice, so the effect obtained is that parents can control the negative behavior of children. Besides from providing emotional support and support in self­esteem, can know the extent to which the form of attention that has been given by each person in order child's self confidence so that children do not fell inferiority when doing interaction outside.
