Abstract

Economic inequality is one of social problems which is quite serious in society. Difference economic income is main cause of economic inequality. Literary works as one of author’s media to notice social phenomenon that occurs in society. As one of literary works, novel represents various of social problems including economic inequality in Arafat Nur’s Novel Tanah Surga Merah. The purpose of this study are (1) describing types of economic inequality in Arafat Nur’s Novel Tanah Surga Merah., (2) presenting impacts of economic inequality in Arafat Nur’s Novel Tanah Surga Merah. The method used of this study was qualitative descriptive method with sociological literature approach. The study object was Arafat Nur’s Novel Tanah Surga Merah by observing the data, sentences, and set of stories in the novel. The data findings were processed through several steps, they were: (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) conclusion. This study was conducted through several procedures, such as preparation, implementation and completion. Based on the result of the analysis and discussion, it is concluded that in Arafat Nur's Novel Tanah Surga Merah there is an economic gap that occurs between ordinary people and government officials. Officials from the Red Party live with all their needs, while ordinary people live with all their shortcomings. They are (1) poverty, inability of fulfilling main necessity such as clothes, foods and shelter. (2) low level of education in the form of illiteracy. In addition, impacts of economic inequality are (1) violence like beating, hitting and shooting. (2) social jealousy is a threat which causes fear and insecurity.
