Abstract

Language function is the use of language in communicating with the other for specific purpose. The use of language is important in daily communication because it can help the addresser conveying particular message to the listener. This paper aims at analyzing kinds of language function and the dominant of language function employed by the main characters in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret novel. This study used qualitative research. The researcher used Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret novel script as the object to collect data of language function in the dialogue of the three main characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The data collected analyzed by using Jakobson theory in Schriffin about language function. The result of this study showed that there were six kinds of language function found in Potter and The Chamber of Secret novel, they are: referential function, phatic function, poetic function, emotive function, conative function, and metalinguistics function. Furthermore, the dominant language function employed by the three main characters was phatic function.
