Abstract
This research attempts to describe the social environment of the characters contained in the novel Jatisaba. Novel Jatisaba is a novel that describes a form of social interaction between characters that is not conducive, causing various problems, such as family disharmony, poverty, and so on. These various problems can influence the behavior of the characters in the Jatisaba novel. Thus, it can be argued that the social environment described by the novel Jatisaba also occurs in real life. The purpose of this study is 1) to describe the social environment of the characters in the novel Jatisaba; 2) describe the function of the social environment of the character in the novel Jatisaba; 3) explains the relevance of the representation of the social environment of the characters in the Jatisaba novel on public education. This research approach is literary ecology, with qualitative research and uses qualitative descriptive methods. This data source is the Jatisaba novel by Ramayda Akmal. The data obtained in this study are in the form of a unit of a story which is in the form of dialogue or monologue in the novel Jatisaba. The analysis technique of this research consists of reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that the form of the social environment consists of: (1) a family environment that has an atmosphere of disharmony, a feeling of hatred, and a break in your relationship; (2) peer environment is described as an atmosphere of friendship and betrayal; (3) the community environment is described by social class conditions, poverty, and remote areas. The social environment function of the characters in the novel Jatisaba is described as having a positive impact including (1) development of offspring, (2) self-development, (3) development of creativity (culture), (4) strengthening solidarity and (5) shelter. However, the function of the social environment also has a negative impact or dysfunction which includes: (1) anarchic actions and (2) high birth rates. The representation of the social environment of the character in the novel Jatisaba contains the contents of the character values that can be relevant to public education including: (1) responsibility, (2) honesty, (3) communicative, (4) independent, (5) tolerance, and (6) caring Direct social will grow by forming quality human resources.
