Abstract
This study describes about the character of Banjar society in Madihin. Madihin is an oral literature of Banjarmasin region that have the genre of poetry and poem-shaped. Recently Madihin is still a performance art that be fancied by Banjar society, as an entertaining represents the character of Banjar society that based on the values, religion and culture of Banjar. The research approach is an approach to sociology of literature, a type of qualitative research and using a qualitative descriptive study. The data research is an unit of tangibles words, phrases and sentences in texts poems of madihin. The data source of this research in the form of videotape of the seven oral literary performances of madihin. Research result are, (1) the type of character society of Banjar including some aspects 1) love the God and His creations, 2) courteous, 3) confident, 4) kind and humble 5) humorous and 6) self-conscious. (2) the function of character society of Banjar in madihin to guide the community in estabilishing good social interaction through aspects,1) relationships within the scope of human beings as religious beings, 2) human relationship within the family, and 3) human relationships within the community, (3) Madihin in literary learning that implied through the representation of community character, it consists of two aspects, is learning process through basic competence and review of developmental psychology of learners as wel
