Abstract

This research focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of using Podcasts to learn speaking skills, as
perceived by the EFL students of English Learning Education Department students at the University of
Muhammadiyah Malang in the academic year 2020-2022. This research used close ended
questionnaire with 32 respondents and 6 of them conducted on semi unstructured interview to collect
the data. This research found, first indicator experiences using Podcast the highest percentage reached
34,4%(n=11) fair, effective and efficient reached 43,8%(n=14) agree, and easier to understand reached
46,9%(n=15) agree. The second indicator is student’s involvement in using Podcast, the first familiarity
with Podcast reached 53,1%(n=17) agree, technical problems reached 46,9%(n=15) fair, and interest
in particular course reached 37,5%(n=12) agree. The third indicator appropriateness Podcast as a
learning media, the first right environment reached 37,5%(n=12) agree, sufficient infrastructure
reached 40,6%(n=13), flexibility of place and time reached 50%(n=16) and internet connectivity
reached 43,8%(n=14) strongly agree. The fourth indicator perceptions of Podcast, first interested in
learning reached 37,5%(n=12) agree, more confident 43,8%(n=14) fair, speaking English improve
reached 46,9%(n=15) agree, and interested in making own Podcast reached 31,3%(n=10) agree and
fair. The last indicator improvement of Podcast, the first pronunciation improved reached 43,8%(14)
agree, vocabulary increased 43,8%(n=14) agree, speak English more fluent reached 43,8%(n=14)
agree, understand better meaning reached 43,8%(n=14) agree, and made sentence in English proper
grammar reached 46,9%(n=15) fair. Findings of this study show that after learning use Podcasts, the
students had better-speaking fluency and accuracy, and they demonstrated some significant changes,
such as having fewer pauses and mispronounced words. In addition, strategies for addressing the
Podcast's weaknesses, which might prevent pupils from developing their speaking abilities, are
explored. In addition to having trouble comprehending the language because many podcasts have
British accents, students need help to discover pertinent information for their studies.
