Abstract

One of the low interest and learning outcomes for this geometry is a learning which is still teacher-centered (conventional), it makes the students to memorize formulas only and procedural work. This learning leads students to understand mathematics without any reason. Therefore, the learning design needs to be designed by involving much reasoning activities. According to Shadiq (2007), reasoning is one of the important components in learning mathematics. So, the researcher tried to apply the learning through the Van Hiele stages: (1) Information, (2) Guided Orientation, (3) Explanation, (4) Free Orientation, and (5) Integration in analyzing students' reasoning ability. This study aims to determine the learning process, students' reasoning ability and learning outcomes. In this study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The learning process is observed from students and teachers? activities which were measured by observation sheet and interview. Besides, the students? reasoning abilities and learning outcomes can be observed from the sheets of students? activities and sheets of students' test in accordance with standard rubrics. As a data source, the elected 34 students class VIII-E SMP Negeri 12 Malang, 2010-2011 school year. The sample was formed based on the 12 students? ability level of the high, medium and low ability. The results showed that learning through the stage of Van Hiele?s thinking on the surface area of prisms and pyramids in class VIII-E SMP Negeri 12 Malang overall went well. It can be looked at the percentage of students and teachers? activities that have increased. From students answer sheets for the individual tests. Not all students doing reasoning based on reasoning process standard well. In the middle and low ability students, they are less accurate and less understand in defining and explaining of the relationships between items to awaken the flat space
