Abstract

This study is aimed to answer the research questions posed: 1) how the students? steps in solving comparison subjects in algebra in the terms of troubleshooting steps, 2) what are the mistakes made by students in completing comparison subjects of algebra; 3) what factors causes students to make mistakes in solving algebra on comparison subjects. This research is categorized into descriptive-qualitative research that focuses on case studies. The object of this research is a class VII-B at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu. Data collection is to use sheets of tests and interviews. This test is given once only after the comparison subjects of algebra has been discussed, and interviews were conducted on the students (respondents) that most widely made mistakes. Based on data analysis, the conclusions obtained in this study were 1) in finishing (doing ) algebra test with main topic comparative For students with high ability, they finish the test very well, it proved with the details for the finishing steps. Meanwhile, for the students who has medium ability in understanding the test is quite good even still have mistake in planing. And for students who have low ability, still cannot understand the test and m ake good plan. The students who has high ability, medium, and low don?t write the solution but only look back the result of solution. 2) students' errors in solving comparison subject of algebra based on Polya problem solving from 24 students, found the average percentage of 9,72% misunderstood the problem, 16,67% of the settlement plan, and 15,28% of implementing the settlement plan. Based on the results of interviews with high, medium and low groups respondent can be concluded that for fourth step such as rechecking the solution which was obtained by some students that do not do it. 3) The factors that cause students? errors in completing the comparison subjects of algebra in large part because students are reluctant to recheck every step of completion and the solution obtained, it is not used to write the form or the formula used in obtaining the solution and it was caused by inaccurate nature of the calculation.
