Abstract
English is an international language. English is spoken all over the world with its own version. University students have to master English based on their department. The students study English because they want to develop their skill. Especially, for students of English department, when somebody joins English department automatically they have to understand English communication especially in speaking. Speaking is one of the ways to study English. To master speaking skill, the lecturer has to use correct technique based on students’ need to make students understand and enjoy the subject well in the class. The objective of this research is to describe the technique of teaching speaking and the weaknesses and strengths used by the lecturer in second semester of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. A descriptive qualitative research was used as the design of the study. The subject of the study was one lecturer of speaking class at English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The result of the study showed that the technique used by lecturer namely students as the center of attention. The strengths of the technique were; 1) Students can feel comfortable in the class, 2) Enjoyable and happy in English, 3) No more hesitations to speak up student’s mind, 4) More confidence, 5) Edutainment, 6) Students forced to understand English language, 7) More practice, 8) Active students. The writer also found the weaknesses of the technique, they were; 1) The technique did not snatch at the good grammar, 2) The technique did not motivate the students to have right pronunciation, and 3) Lack of interaction between lecture and students.
