Abstract
Language is used by human beings to communicate with others. If students want to communicate with all persons in the word easily, they have to master English. In Indonesia, English is a second language. English was introduced to the elementary school. Teachers plays an important role. Because the students of elementary school prefer learning by doing, so the teacher must be creative to choose various techniques to arouse the students’ interest in learning English. This study is concerned with teaching English in Elementary school as a local content. The writer wants to investigate the technique of teaching vocabulary used by the teachers at SDN Bugih III Pamekasan-Madura. The purposes of this study are to describe the teaching technique used by the teachers and find out the reason of the teacher in using the technique used in teaching English vocabulary. The design of research used in this study is descriptive. The subjects of this study are all English teachers at SDN Bugih III Pamekasan –Madura. There are two English teachers at this school. The instruments of this study are observation and interview. The interview conducted for two day that is from December 23rd to 24th 2002. The writer observed the techniques of teaching vocabulary applied by the teachers in teaching learning process conducted. This observation was conducted to check whether the techniques of teaching vocabulary that were stated by the teachers in the interview were really implemented or not. The writer conducted the observation during one week that is from December 23rd to 28th 2002. The result of this study shows that the teachers employed three techniques in teaching vocabulary at SDN Bugih III Pamekasan-Madura. They are picture, word games, and textbook. From the three techniques that have been applied to the students, picture is very frequently used by the English teacher in mastering the English vocabulary in the elementary school at SDN Bugih III Pamekasan-Madura.
