Abstract
Literature is the writing that is valued as work of art, especially fiction, drama and poetry where the readers can experience the world around them through their imagination. Novel as one of literary works closely related to human life. The problems that are experienced by the characters are the reflection of human problems in real life. One can study human life not only their characteristics but also human interaction by studying and analyzing novel. That is why the writer is interested in conducting study on love affair between Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock taken from Robert Marshall’s novel “Shadow Makers”. Her purposes of the study are to describe the background of love affair and to know the end of love affair. This study will significantly provide positive contribution toward the teaching of literature. It encourages the students to pay attention to literature so the teaching and learning process will be better and run well, and they have good ability in mastering literature. The research design used is descriptive method. The writer of this thesis uses this method by reviewing literary research to provide research data. The technique used in this method is library research in the form of articles, books, and dictionaries as the sources of study. The writer of this thesis applies objective approach which concerns with the object itself, Robert Marshall’s work only. All events or elements in the novel of “Shadow Makers” are considered as population. The sample is some paragraphs, events or dialogue quotations showing the relationship with the problem. The steps in collecting data in this thesis are: (1) reading and understanding novel “Shadow Makers” written by Robert Marshall, (2) choosing the data dealing with the problems that will be investigated, (3) selecting data dealing with the purposes of the study on the novel, (4) conducting survey toward paragraphs and dialogues in the novel. The result of this study can be concluded that there are five things that cause Dr. J. Robert Oppeheimer strays from his primary relationship. These five things are the background of love affair, namely: Jean Tatlock’s performance, sweet memory, the need, pressure, and escape. The end of love affair is the death of Jean Tatlock because she commits suicide. As a result, it makes Dr. J. Robert Oppeheimer shock because he cannot accept the fact that Jean Tatlock dies.
