Abstract

Being a translator is not only about knowing various languages, but it also requires understanding about what and how those languages can be understood by TL readers. There are various phenomena found of SpongeBob Movie in translation strategies, more specifically the subtitles which are sometimes different from the literal meaning of the words spoken. Thus, the researcher selects it as the object of this study.
The aim of this study is to find the translation strategies and the most dominant of translating strategies used in the subtitle of SpongeBob Movie. The researcher analyzed subtitles of SpongeBob Movie from English into Indonesian. This study used a mixed method design because combines between describing information related to phenomena as much as possible through the description of words and showing the numeric data to gain the result of the research problem.
The strategies used in this study are based on Baker (1992). The theory states there are 8 strategies used by professional translators. The results of this study show 7 strategies were used. The most dominant strategies used in this study is translation by omission and the unutilized strategies is translation by illustration. It might be the translator assumed more comfortable or easier for readers to understand by omitted over-explanatory words than explaining with a picture or an illustration.
