Abstract

The goals of this study are to explain about the teaching strategy is used by the teacher and how the teacher applies the teaching strategy in fostering students’ critical thinking in reading comprehension class at university of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research was a qualitative research especially a descriptive research. Using this design because it was intended to explain the teaching strategy and how to apply the teaching strategy used by the teacher in order to foster students’ critical thinking in reading comprehension. The subject was an English teacher of reading comprehension class at university of Muhammadiyah Malang. The instrument used in this research were observation checklist, observation field-notes and interview guide. The result showed that the teacher used three teaching strategies in fostering students’ critical thinking. Theyare, questioning strategy, socratic discussion and the technique of analyzing thelogic of the article. Moreover, it found that questioning strategy more dominantused by the teacher in fostering students’ critical thinking in reading comprehension class.
