ANALISA PENANGGUHAN VFA (Visiting Forces Agreement ) KAITAN TERHADAP HUBUNGAN DIPLOMATIK FILIPINA-AMERIKA SERIKAT TAHUN 2020-2021

This study aims to find out and analyze why the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, decided to suspend the VFA, a military cooperation between the Philippines and the United States which was suspended for the period 2020-2021. This suspension is the result of President Rodrigo Duterte's unilateral decision to be dissatisfied with the behavior of the United States to interfere in the domestic affairs of the Philippines, especially regarding human rights violations during the War on Drugs. War on Drugs is a drug eradication operation carried out by President Rodrigo Duterte during his tenure. Therefore, this study uses polyheuristic theory by Alex Mintz to analyze the cognitive and rationalist aspects that became the basis for President Rodrigo Duterte's decision to suspend the VFA. The author uses a literature study by examining secondary data sources such as books, and electronic media such as journals, internet, mass media, and newspapers. The results of this study indicate that Rodrigo Duterte's leadership style is dominated by a populist approach in domestic affairs, while pragmatic in foreign policy decisions where Duterte adopts an explicit defensive neorealist approach that puts the interests of the Philippines above personal interests.
