Abstract

The United States government blocked TikTok from 2019 to 2022. The purpose of this research is to show the security strategy implemented by the United States government regarding the issue of cyber threats. The action taken started with the issue of a data breach carried out by Bytedance internal staff which leaked the data of two journalists from the United States, then followed by the issue of a data breach by a group of hackers. With these two issues, the United States Government is worried that TikTok will collaborate with the Chinese Government to leak the internal data of TikTok users, which means TikTok has the potential to carry out espionage. Remembering that TikTok is an IT-based company originating from China. This thesis shows the reasons why the United States Government blocked TikTok, which uses Realism Theory and the Cyber Security concept to maintain national security.
