Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood, during which adolescents experience many developments and changes in the flow of life. Many changes that occurred during adolescent development include physical, emotional, social, cognitive changes. During this period of change, adolescents need good emotional competence, where parental attachment is an important role in the development of individual emotions. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of parental attachment on adolescent emotional competence. This research used quantitative research w ith correlational methods. The sampling technique used in this study was accidental sampling technique. The participants of this research were adolescents with an age range of 12-21 years which totaled 350 subjects. The scale used in this research is the IPPA (Inventory Parent and Peer Attachment) scale for parental attachment variables and the PEC (The Profile of Emotional Competence) scale for emotional competence variables. Based on the results of the study, it shows that the sig value is 0.00 (p <0.05) which means that there is an influence between parental attachment on adolescent emotional competence. The result of R square is 0.203 so that it can be interpreted that the parental attachment variable provides an influence of 20.3% on the emotional competence variable.
