Abstract

This study aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the use of TikTok in EFL classrooms as a learning medium in speaking skill of students English Language Education Department (ELED) University of Muhammadiyah Malang in the 2020-2021 academic years. This research used mixed method desain to obtain very comprehensive and sufficient information. The sample used for this research is 41 students for quantitative data and 3 students for qualitative data. Questionnaire and unstructured interviews were employed to obtain data in this study. The results show that there are strengths and weaknesses using TikTok as a learning medium for speaking skills. The strengths of TikTok is to improve students' speaking abilities and push them to become more confident. Besides, it can enhance students' English speaking skills by making it easier to understand English material and enhancing their interest in learning. Moreover, the weaknesses revealed that students are dissatisfied with the large data quota required for access, which may limit their online learning activity. Futhermore, time consumption on TikTok can affect the quality of learning, leading to distraction and exposure to non-educational content.
