Abstract

Background: Most of Indonesia's population works as farmers. This work causes the risk of occupational diseases related to musculoskeletal complaints due to unergonomic work posture and repetitive workloads, especially on the upper extremities or Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). Repetitive strain injuries occur due to stretching of the muscle structures, ligaments and nerves from repetitive movements over a long period of time in the shoulders, elbows and wrists, resulting in pain and tingling sensations. Repetitive activities among farmers can be caused when hoeing, plowing fields, planting rice, weeding and fertilizing.
Objective: To determine the correlation of work posture and physical workload on the risk of repetitive strain injuries in rice farmers in Desa Pakisaji, Kabupaten Malang.
Method: The design of this research is research using analytical observational methods with cross sectional methods. Primary data was taken from direct observing farming activities and filling out the OWAS and ART Tool assessment sheets in November-December 2023 in Desa Pakisaji, Kabupaten Malang using purposive sampling techniques and data analysis using the Spearman rho test.
Results: In this study there were 49 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria with the results of the study showing that there was a correlation between work posture and repetitive strain injuries with p-value = 0.000 (p<0.05) with a correlation value of 0.579 means in medium correlation strength. Meanwhile, for physical workload and repetitive strain injuries, there is also a relationship with p-value = 0.003 (p<0.05) with a correlation value of 0.422 means in medium correlation strength
Conclusion: There is a relationship between work posture and physical workload on the risk of repetitive strain injuries in rice farmers in Desa Pakisaji, Kabupaten Malang.
