Abstract

Diplomatic relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia have experienced conflict for approximately thirty years. This was caused by the case of the theft of blue diamonds at the palace of the Saudi royal prince, the perpetrators of which were palace cleaning staff who came from Thailand, and in handling the case, three diplomats and one trusted person of the Saudi royal palace were killed in Thailand while trying to dig up information regarding where the treasure went. it was stolen. Even though it had previously been returned, almost eighty percent of the jewelry was replica, causing relations between the two countries to heat up for three decades, 2022 will be the starting point for improving relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia after the official visit of the Thai prime minister to Saudi Arabia on January 25 2022 During the visit, an agreement was reached between both parties agreeing to re-increase diplomatic relations after a long period of tension. This research uses explanatory and qualitative methods to explain the reasons for Saudi Arabia to improve its diplomatic relations with Thailand. The author uses the concept of national interest and rational choice theory to explain the reasons why Saudi Arabia wants to improve its diplomatic relations with Thailand. The results of this research show that the reason for Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations with Thailand is to revitalize various areas of cooperation, such as trade and investment, food security, energy, public health and tourism, as well as looking for new potential areas of cooperation, such as the environment, renewable energy , and digital transformation.
