Abstract

The presence of an autistic child in the family has a profound effect and affects sibling relationships. With siblings, especially in communication when sibling relationship conflicts occur. The aim of this research is to find out how to resolve conflict in sibling relationships between siblings with autism. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. There were 2 informants in this study, selected according to the criteria determined by the researcher. Data collection uses interview techniques. Data analysis uses the Relational Dialectics theory developed by Baxter and Rawlins in (1988). In this theory, it explains about life which will be related to the characteristics of ongoing tensions which cause contradictions in a relationship. The research results illustrate that overall the sibling relationships that exist between teenagers and autistic siblings are based on emotional closeness, conflicting relationships and sibling rivalry. A conflicted relationship is characterized by constant shouting from siblings, late responses, such as when they are told to always postpone if they are already busy with something they like. This relationship causes conflict with the autistic sibling which occurs verbally. Such as getting angry when told or not responding to the desired response. Apart from that, conflict also brings them closer together, marked by positive interactions, namely continuing to provide support and having empathy for their autistic sibling. This close relationship is caused by an appropriate accepting response towards an autistic sibling. Thus forming the characteristics of being a more empathetic person which improves sibling relationships. By having good control over your ego by being more patient and tolerant of existing differences.
