Abstract

Background : Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that has radical antidote, pigmentation, photoprotectant, and hyperpigmentation properties. Today serums are so popular that they are becoming a major part of skin care products. Serum is a cosmetic preparation with low viscosity so that it is easily absorbed by the skin. A gel is a transparent semi-solid preparation, consisting of a dispersed solution of one or more active ingredients in a suitable hydrophilic or hydrophobic base. Base gel / gelling agent is a polymer component that has a high molecular weight and is a combination of several molecules and twists of the polymer that will give viscous properties to the gel. The higher the concentration of gelling agent used, the higher the viscosity of the gel because the gel structure is stronger
Objective : This study aims to obtain data on gelling agent / gel base used in vitamin C serum products circulating in Indonesia and gelling agent / gel base most widely used in vitamin C serum products circulating in Indonesia.
Methods : Conducted product review study research with simple quantitative analysis methods. Than tested the validity and reability test using SPSS.
Result and Conclusions : Gelling agent / gel base used in vitamin C serum products circulating in Indonesia are xanthan gum, hydroxyethylcellulose, carbomer or carbopol and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The most widely used gelling agent / gel base in vitamin C serum products circulating in Indonesia is xanthan gum as many as 28 products (45,16%) used singly and in combination.
